1. KITE: 75% of the sport. It’s what pulls the rider through the water perpendicular to the wind direction. There are several types of kites on the market to include Bow, Hybrid, Supported Leading Edge SLE, C kites, as well as foil kites mostly used for snow kiting.
2. BOARD: The other 25% of kite boarding. Types include wakeboard, twin tip, surf style, skim boards, and light wind boards.
3. FOOT STRAPS: These secure the riders feet to the board and they can be adjustable to fit different riders feet sizes or to accommodate booties.
4. HARNESS: Connects the rider to the kite and allows the use of the rider’s body weight to help hold down the power of the kite.
5. CONTROL BAR: The bar is used to control the kite and to move the kite back and forth through the wind window. Length varies from 18cm-36cm based on personal preference and kite size. It’s also adjustable to allow the kite to be flown and various wind conditions.
6. BAR THROW: The bar controls the power of the kite. Pulling the bar towards you give the kite more power and pushing the bar away from the rider give the kite less power.
7. KITE LINES: Amazingly strong, the lines that control the kite must be maintained. They range from 10 meters to 30 meters in length and different line lengths can change the power and speed of the kite.
8. SAFETY RELEASE: If all else fails, activating the safety release will totally depower the kite. The secondary release dis-connect the rider from the kite completely.
9. HELMET: You hope you’ll never need it, but if you do, you’ll be glad you have it.
10. IMPACT VEST OR PERSONAL FLOTATION DEVICE (PFD): Extra Buoyancy and protection gives peace of mind so the rider can focus on riding.
11. RASH GUARD/WETSUIT: Protect the skin from prolonged exposure to the harmful rays of the sun and offers warmth from the wind chill especially during the winter months.
